A community event, and pretty peripheral to fishing, but still mightily cool and related to my day job: Announcing Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Laboratory’s 13th Annual Winter Program and Silent Auction
Special guest speaker Dr. Charles Herdendorf, Science Officer of the Columbus-America Discovery Group expedition
“Treasures of a Lost Voyage: Discovery and Exploration of the Gold Rush Steamer Central America”
SS Central America, sometimes called the Ship of Gold, was a 280-foot sidewheel steamer that operated between Central America and the eastern coast of the United States during the 1850s. She was originally named the SS George Law, after Mr. George Law of New York. The ship sank in a hurricane in September 1857, along with 400 passengers and crew and 30,000 pounds of gold, contributing to the Panic of 1857.
Free parking, admission, and refreshments. Silent Auction payment by check or cash only.
Open to the general public, but seating is limited; reserve your seat at stonelab.osu.edu/events/winter-program/.

We got a nice plug in Golo's Columbus Dispatch column. I like his description of "A sea tale about shipwreck, lost lives, lost gold and economic panic headlines the 13th annual Winter Program and Silent Auction, scheduled from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the Fawcett Center at Ohio State, to benefit the school's Stone Lab."
