I've been hitting the Scioto River these past three days...did some scouting and found a few new access points.
I've been using my St Croix Avids spinning rods in UL and Light action...gives me an excuse for catching the smallest fish in Ohio.
Some decent crappie and bluegill, taken on spoons and spinners...started out the same tonight...until about 8:30 pm.
I had lost yet another Mepp's to the hungry Scioto and decided to try a 1/8 oz Storm wildeye swim shad in bluegill. (Lost a crankbait and a spoon too, before the spinner.)
On the 6th cast, it got nailed, then the drag yowled a bit...got the fish close; a big warmouth, about 13" , it actually tail danced and spit the thing out!! I figure that he must have clamped down on it sideways, or had it in his mouth so the hook wasn't embedded. This is the third warmouth I've hooked this year...I have come to rather like them. I tightened my drag a bit though.
Of course, two casts later, I embed the swim shad in something and lost it. I only had the one with me.
Brought A Knife To A Gunfight!!
With the light fading and sort of tired of losing pricey baits, I decided to use an 1/8 oz jig and a 4" Berkeley power worm in purple. Water clarity was only about 12" and with the light fading, it would definately be heard, rather than seen, if taken.
I made about 20 casts and then about 9:30 pm I thought I had hit another snag...then the snag moved sideways very strongly...Hoot!!...the fish felt strong and I just set the hook and kept the line tight. I got him close, A Bass!!! Closer...whoop, a big LM bass...about 15 inches. Then I screwed up...I'm by myself and without a net, I knew I should have kept him in the water. The Avid is nearly bent double, I'm kneeling down to grab his lower jaw, he's spinning and I'm trying to be mindful of that hook...then the 4lb line broke at the knot!!
Splash!!
$^&*((##%^&!!
Oh, well...I do catch and release anyway...though I'm not happy that I was unable to get the jig out of his jaw; though the way it was hooked, I figure that he'll spit it out OK eventually.
My largest bass so far this year and the largest fish caught so far in the Scioto River!!
That's it for the Trilene XL though...I was using Sufix Elite so far this year, then backslid and bought some Trilene, it's cheaper and Berkeley has a rebate offer going on....back to Sufix...lesson learned
Next week I'll be going back with my medium rod!!
