Saw an intersting bird tonight about 8pm.
Heron shaped, about ten inches tall, orange stilt legs, black crest, rust/orange face, folded wings were gray/blue.
It was fishing from shore at a pond in the manner that a great blue heron does.
Any ideas??

My first guess would be a Black-crowned Night Heron with a dirty face, although 10" seems a little on the short side. Black-crowned Night Herons are pretty common to marshy places in Ohio in the summer. They are pretty active into the evening. You often hear them calling on marshes at night. I think they sound a little like barking chihuahuas. Could it be this guy? www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Black-crowned_Night-Heron/id

The body shape is about right...but it lacks the rust/orange cheeks of the face...it's lighter coloration on the breast was not that white...folded wings were completely grey/blue. Another reason to always take my camera, as I was able to get within about ten feet of the bird and could have gotten a good picture.

Looking through the Cornell Lab Bird guide...I suspect that it was a green heron...smaller than adult size, maybe it was still a juvenile and this explains the slight coloration difference.

Green Herons are much smaller too, giving a better match for your size estimate.

I wonder if it weren't a juvenile...a Least Bittern was suggested at OGF...the head and face matched better, but it definately had the Green Heron wing feather coloration. Could also be my viewing position, since I saw more of the bird from the back. Least Bittern Uploaded with ImageShack.usGreen Heron Uploaded with ImageShack.us
