Spent a couple hours hiking the open waters of the Hocking River yesterday. I wished had carried a rod and gear. After the pending thaw this coming weekend I think season will be considered open for bronzebacks. The waders are out and I have a canoe that just needs it new license applied.
Are you ready?

I am hopefully going up to Cabelas this weekend. Then, I will be ready for some smallie action. Still a little cold yet, but I'll be ready after this weekend.

In a more normal winter/spring with more normal temps I usually will be on the river in March. Focus on the 3rd day of a warming cycle or several sunny days.
Water temps of 40-45 deg. will have the smallies moving out of or farther from wintering holes. I'll be dead sticking jigs, fuzzy grubs and small tubes as temps near 45 deg. in riffles and shallow runs.
