I have two sons, Tyler who will be 14 yrs. old in April and Christopher who will be 12 in Dec.
I started them out stream wading for smallmouth bass when Tyler was 8, Christopher was 6...they have been fishing steadily ever since.
I know when I was young, most kids were learning to fish with push buttons, bobbers and nightcrawlers in ponds for bluegill...I on the other hand had a small pack of in-line spinners and curly tailed grubs in my pocket and was in the local streams after rock bass and smallmouth.
In the first season my boys waded, they both had many firsts...and Tyler set the bar high for himself with some very impressive Personal Bests.
First up my son Christopher - at this time age 6. He couldnt cast the UL spinning combo,so I had to cast it out, then hand it to him to retrieve..he did very well for such a young age.
And then Tyler...this boy has always been a handful, at a young age he has always been an outdoors type person...turn your back for a second hes out in the backyard in the rain, snow sleet, does'nt matter. I dont know where he gets it from... ?
The spinning combo they used those first few seasons was one I bought for Tyler..5'3" Fenwick HMX with a Shimano 500 Sedona. Soon after Tyler used his B-day money to buy an Okuma Metaloid 15.
His first "big one"
Then one day Tyler wanted to go wading, my buddy Jake stopped by the house and we both guided him on that trip. Tyler was having a very god day and had over 15 smallies to 14-15"..then in one spot, as he cast his lure and started the retrieve..I saw a big fish roll on the lure...when he struck the fish and it came out of the water Jake and I knew this was going to be a very tough test on such a green angler. But Tyler won , with a little help from us.
At age 8 his PB smallie out of a VERY small stream was 18.50"...needless to say I was a very proud Dad.
I have tons more pictures of those early years wading....Tyler still is very into fishing, specially for smallmouth and many other species. Christopher does like to fish and maybe he will be more into it later in life, but for now he's into girls and video games...which is alright with me..for now .
Tyler all grown up now;
Only thing that kept me out of a lot of trouble when I was young was FISHING.....get them started early and if they get hooked, the better off they'll be.
Well except finding them using your expensive tackle down the street at the local pond.....they have no concept of $200 spinning reels or $300 fishing rods...geez!
