Just curious, Joe, how? Did you upload them elsewhere and paste in the url here, or is there some cryptic upload photo button here of which I am not aware?

Sad indeed. I remember Steve as a tireless champion of smallmouth bass and healthy streams.

Yes, my hypothesizing would have mirrored the former description, but not been so geologically eloquent.

That backpack apparatus is a backpack electrofisher. Essentially, a variable-voltage pulsator driven by something like a small car battery. You power up, drop a pair of electrodes in the water to complete a circuit, and stun any fish within the field.
Yeah, that is a gorgeous river. I could speculate on how those round cuts are formed, but not being a geologist, I wouldn't want you lot to make fun of me.

Cool. Thanks so much for sharing. Ohio is engaged in a great effort to restore our native brook trout. You can hear a little online interview about that here: www.flyfishohio.com/NativeBrooktroutInterview.htmThere is a fine (albeit brief) report compiled by Trout Unlimited back in 2006. It's packed with nice range maps and brief state-by-state updates (at that time). If you can track it down, look for: - Trout Unlimited. 2006. Eastern brook trout: status and threats. Trout Unlimited (for the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture), Arlington, VA.
They were supposed to issue a more detailed "Distribution, status, and perturbations to brook trout within the eastern United States" later in that same year, but I've never gotten a copy of it to my shelves. I've been very fortunate to do some work with coasters (lake-run brook trout) in the far northwest UP of MI. You can see some photos of that excursion here: www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2040086&id=1044223851&l=24ff7ecda3
