I assume most of you know a couple new species of carp are marching up the Mississippi watershed and threatening the Great Lakes via the canals that connect those systems in Chicago. Here's a recent article to present a well-balanced perspective: 25 March 2010 Chicago Reader: Lawyers, Carp, and Money

PS: I should add that the OCAFS parent society, the American Fisheries Society (AFS: i.e., the professional organization for fisheries biologists in North America) does have an official position on dam removal. Always pragmatic, the essence of the AFS position is if a dam is evaluated and the potential benefits of removal are likely to outweigh the benefits of any services the dam provides, the dam should go. You can find both summary and detail statements from the AFS under no. 32 on this page: www.fisheries.org/afs/policy_statements.html

I also hold positions with the Ohio Chapter of the American Fisheries Society (OCAFS). My Stewardship Committee assembled a resolution in support of the removal of the 5th Ave. Dam, a draft of which can be seen at the OCAFS site: www.biosci.ohio-state.edu/~ocafs/A clause on hazards to paddlecraft navigation has been added since that draft was posted.

I did the Cleveland show in the new Euclid location. It was alright.
How was Columbus'?

I think part of the problem is there are multiple problems in different places, so the problem itself isn't narrow: hormones and endocrine disruptors as runoff from agricultural operations, hormones and hormone mimics in pharmaceuticals and even cosmetics concentrated in urban places, etc.

Are you thinking of the 5th Ave. dam?

...And nobody wants their ever-tightening federal budgets to be occupied by more and more responsibilities.

Right now, it's a lack of effective regulations. The USEPA and Coast Guard sometimes wrangle over who should have enforcement responsibilities (one gets the impression that each would rather it's the other).

Something really needs to be done to reduce ballast water introductions of invasive species to the Great Lakes. Catch rates of smallmouth on Lake Ontario down over 80% following goby introduction! Attachments:

I'm still here and will stay active here as available. Even when not here specifically, much of my professional life and many other activities are given to protecting good aquatic habitat and fisheries. Planning for a fish-rich 2010.

I'm curious. I don't find much opportunity to fish or work in that SE corner.
