Well I did finally get a baitcast outfit to tote to the rivers this year. I did not get the Revo that I wanted, but I have a nice little Abu Garcia C4 and I matched that with a 6' Berkley Lighting. Not the most advanced set up, but it should do well with SP's and CB's. I have some gift cards for Cabelas and I am going to pick up a Tourney Trail spinning rod combo with a Diawa Excelor. I am not sure if I want a 6'6" or the 7'r. I am leaning toward the 7. This will replace the Croix I lost last fall. I also plan to add some new SP's to the bait box, maybe an Xrap jerkbait and maybe another wake bait(if the Manns dont produce I will give up on them). I think I am going to pick up some more Spidewire Ultracast to.
Anyone else getting into some new gear for 2009?

I got so much new gear last year Kyle that I am on a self imposed ban on new gear.
I wonder how long it will last......

I've added two Quantum PT baitcasters (6.3:1 & 7.0:1) and a pair of Fenwick HMX rods, 6.5' & 7' . Probably florocarbon or copolymer on the former and Stren braid on the latter.
I'll continue with the Shimano Saharra or Okuma Metaloid spinning with braid and copolymer.
I'll be looking at fishing out of a canoe more to give the new shoulder additional time to strengthen.

The new bass pro shop up in Perrysburg/Toledo. Loves baseball and I found it to be better organized and just easier to navigate than the fishing section at Cabelas. If you happen to go that way it's worth the detour! Actually I do need a new reel for my 6'6 med spin rod, something that sounds less like a coffee grinder. Seeing ecoangler and kokofisherman both like the Diawa exceller makes me want to consider it. Otherwise I would really like to dig deep into my tackle box and catch some fish on those baits I already have but rarely use. that would make my day

DD I considering parting with my Approach 10 and possible other yaks. Darn! I've only had that Approach out 10 times in the last two seasons and its a joy to float and fish. The shoulders may become a limiting physical factor. I'll be returning to canoes.
As long as I can get on the water is all that waters!
Fish fear me! Women love me!

kyle, i picked up a dagger nomad. its a hard core creek boat. i have intention of using it on the lower gauley and big sandy in wv. i got into some pretty heavy ww last fall and would like to expand on it with some different technical creeks this year.

Rick, if you go to sell the approach, let me know what you are asking. I might be interested.

Wookie, I'll contact you first. Hoping to test my shoulders in the next few weeks to see "IF" Im going to be able to use a yak. Otherwise I'll reactive my canoe flotilla. I have a feeling my WW days are past me. I think I have my Nomad 8.5 & Wave Sport Super EZ sold. The Approach is a last resort. Will probably have a Pungo Classic and a Perception Acadia 125 Expedition that may follow. I'm going to keep my Manta Ray 12 for the spouse and friends that visit. Getting old and battered by the river stinks!!!

Ended up picking up a pfleuger supreme spinning reel for $75, it looks nice and is very smooth altho it does have some winding noise. We'll see what comes of it after some hard time on the water. I'll use it with 8lb flouro and 20lb braid.
Going to experiment this year with tube craws made by Yum. You put a 1/8oz jighead inside and they are almost weedless. Also I got 2 bottles of spike-it worm paint in orange/chartreuse, a little secret that "tubes rule" Al B. turned me on to.
Still looking for that perfect "searching" bait for those long, gliding sections that I think don't have too many fish but you never know. Something other than a super fluke.

To revisit my gear purchases for this year. The TT & Excelor combo is friggin sweet. I absolutely love it. I spooled the Excelor with 6lb Suffix Elite mono and Oh my. I can bomb cast a 1/8 jig or buzzbait about 60-70 yards. It's awesome. The reel is smooth and tight. So far it has performed to my expectations. Now, she just needs to give me more than 2 seasons of good performance and I'll have a new favorite reel. The 7 foot rod is awesome but a little tricky at times on small creeks, but I am getting better. Mikem you mentioned a search bait for the long slow sections.....that little 1/8 buzzbait is nice as it doesnt make to much commotion and you can fish it slow and so tempting for the fish. Plus it is contantly moving so you can cover a lot of water in a relatively short amount of time.
The C4 works with the Berkley Ligtnining Strike, but on a long float my hands and wrist was a little sore. I think it is a tad heavy for river use. This offseaon I hope to bump the reel up to a heavy 7 1/2' bass rod and it will be a light action musky stick. I hope to score a 5'6" baitcaster that is lighter than the IM6 Lighting so maybe a Croix or equivalent. I also hope to score a light weight low profile baitcaster. If anyone has one they might sell you should let me know(Stuckie you gotta Diawa or Plueger you can sell me right?). I don't think I'll get out for the holiday, but the rest of July should offer me more time on the water.

Likewise I'm in love with my new Quantum Engergy PT casting reels. I'm love the Fireline Crystal braid on my spinning. I was always a Stren Super Braid angler. Not anymore. I'm backing up the spinning and casting with copolymer and florocarbon lines.

Its kinda bizarre. I thought the shoulder injury was going to put a serious damper on yak paddling & fishing. I'm actually finding it easier with some equipment and technique changes.
My Approach has become my #1 angling and fishing boat. I thought the Manta Ray or my solo canoes would be holding down those duties.
I may have to part with a couple more canoes.
